The sound of a kitten’s cries outside his home prompted a man to investigate. Then he realized where the cries were coming from: deep within a ventilation pipe. So he decided to help the young cat, and he was rewarded with the sweetest thank you when she finally emerged.

In the spring of 2017 the man behind the kitten rescue shared a video of the harrowing event. And according to Little Things, he had heard the young creature meowing outside. But he wasn’t sure exactly where the distressed animal was.

So he reportedly went to figure it out, looking around for potential kitten hiding places. Then he realized that the cries were coming from perhaps the worst possible place: a ventilation pipe stretching six and a half feet into the ground.

A look inside the pipe revealed that the kitten was, indeed, stuck – so the man had to move quickly. He therefore snatched a piece of material and threaded it into the pipe, allowing the cat to climb up and latch onto it.

In the video footage, the kitten gets in position, and the man begins to gently pull the material upward so that he can remove the creature from the pipe. And as the kitten starts sliding toward the top, she lets out a loud meow.

But just after she meows a second time, it seems as though the kitten realizes what is happening. And rather than simply holding onto the material that is pulling her out of the ventilation pipe, she begins to climb.

Soon afterwards, the calico kitten reaches the top of the pipe. And as she emerges, it is clear just how tiny the space that she had fallen into is. Because even though only half of the pipe’s top is exposed, she still has to squeeze out to free herself.

But when she does, she and another kitten – diligently waiting for its sibling at the top of the tube – cannot stop meowing in delight. Then they show their rescuer a bit of gratitude for his quick thinking.

The pair of kittens actually encircle the man and continue to meow as they jump onto his lap. Apparently, this is their feline way of expressing how thankful they are that he had helped them.

Those who watched the clip on YouTube also felt the same way about the man who had helped the cats. One person wrote, “True hero.” Another commented, “You are a good person for helping kittens. I love kittens, and it makes me sad when [they’re] in danger.”

Interestingly, too, a similar story unfolded in China – although there, the stakes were much higher. You see, a mother cat’s newborn kitten had gotten stuck inside a pipe. And as the young of our feline friends need their mothers’ milk for the first four weeks of their lives, this kitten would have been in grave danger if it didn’t get out and rejoin its mom.

In footage from this event, the kitten’s apparently protective mother stands guard at the pipe’s mouth as her baby’s meows echo from within. Soon, though, humans begin to take notice of her behavior, and rescuers eventually arrive to try and free the newborn.

The men peer then into the pipe, while the mother cat looks on. They first try to catch a glimpse of the trapped newborn, but they seemingly can’t see a thing. So a rescuer simply reaches his arm as far into the pipe as it will go.

Yet this is not enough to reach the kitten. And so the rescuer’s next attempt will call for more extreme measures. And it will seemingly be their last hope for retrieving the creature.

Finally, then, one of the men in charge of the rescue appears brandishing a saw. And he uses the instrument to slice the pipe open to free the kitten. He is very careful, of course, making sure to cut far from where the newborn cat is stuck.

And with that, they are finished. One man is then able to reach inside of the opened pipe and scoop out the male kitten. The team is also thrilled to have been of help – and to return the newborn cat to his mother.

In the clip, the mother cat thoroughly sniffs her baby to make sure he is okay. The Dodo later reported that she seemed happy to have the kitten back in her sights. And viewers of the clip, which racked up more than 650,000 views on YouTube, felt the same way.

One YouTube user named Phyllis Steging wrote, “I’m so glad they saved this itty bitty baby. They sure needed help. Hope Mom grabbed her baby and went to safety. That’s a hard way to start your life. But the little one will make it with Mom’s help.”

Many also lauded the cheerful rescuers, who appeared happy to be able to help the kitten. “The smile on his face says it all. It was worth it, and he’d do it again. Yay for good people,” wrote one person. Another added, “We need more people like this!”

Just as in the first video, the cat was lucky to have had a willing human rescuer on her side. To that end, one viewer commented, “Thank you to all the wonderful people that rescued the kitten. I love animals. These videos do my heart good.”
