One of the great things about dogs is that, no matter what, they love to have a good time. Still, for pups who have seen some serious trauma in their lives, bringing out that fun side isn’t always an easy task.
That was certainly the case for two rescue dogs named Benson and Maddox. The former came from an abusive household, while the latter had to be relocated when his owner was no longer able to care for him.
Luckily, a New Jersey-based rescue organization called Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter knew exactly what to do…
Much like humans, dogs can become creatures of habit and routine. It can be quite scary for them when they’re forced to adapt to a new situation, too. Hey, even dogs don’t like change, right?

Even when they’re living in abusive, neglectful, or otherwise unpleasant homes, it can still be frightening to be taken away from your current living situation and forced into a new one. In fact, all the uncertainty that comes with that move can cause some serious anxiety.

That’s why it’s so important to make sure that, just as you would want to do with humans, dogs are comfortable in their new homes. Even if the pup is in a shelter or foster home, they need to be treated properly to help ease that transition. One shelter knew just how to make that possible…

Sometimes, all that it takes to properly welcome a dog into a new environment, especially when they’ve had a rough life, is to do one fun and unique thing with them to show that they’re loved. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, either.

Benson the dog was in definite need of a pick-me-up! He was brought to the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter in Forked River, New Jersey, after being rescued from an abusive owner. He definitely looked ready for a new life! Still, something was missing…

Maddox the dog had a similar story, as he was dropped off at the shelter by an owner who could no longer care for him. He, like Benson, may have come to the shelter from unfortunate circumstances, but he must have been eager to see what his new life would be like. He had no idea what was coming…

Luckily for both of them, though, there was a special surprise waiting for the dogs at the shelter. When these adorable pups discovered what it was, they couldn’t contain their excitement!

Why, it was a giant tennis ball! Neither one of these furry friends could manage to figure out a way to get this tennis ball in their mouths. At one point, though, it did look like Benson had managed to drag it a bit, but that didn’t last long…

Better yet, the challenge to control and master that giant tennis ball didn’t seem to actually frustrate either of the dogs too much, because they were definitely having the times of their lives!

What a wonderful way to welcome these dogs into their new and, hopefully, improved lives. The dogs must be grateful, and hopefully things only continue to get better for them from there!

They can’t get enough of their new toy. Just wait until they try to bury it in the yard!
